Medela Pump in Style – Does it Deserve All of Its Awards and Great Reviews?
When you are looking at the top-ranking breast pumps, you’ll quickly come across the Medela Pump in Style. Winner of the 2017 Mom’s Pick Award, I wanted to check it out to see if it deserves this accolade.
What’s more, I wanted to tell readers who this pump is best suited for, what features make it stand out, and who should stay away from it. Here’s what I’ve discovered.
The Medela Pump in Style is an electric double breast pump, designed for moms who breastfeed several times a day. The battery operation allows for on-the-go use, while the two-phase expression facilitates faster and more efficient pumping.
The shields are comfortable during use and available in different sizes. The manufacturer designed the let-down button to make pumping easier, and the pumping speed and vacuum is adjustable by turning a knob. You can choose the desired settings and achieve efficient pumping action without experiencing any discomfort.
The Pump in Style comes with an array of useful accessories, including a smart microfiber tote bag for stylish portability as well as an internal cooler bag. All parts that come in contact with your breast milk are BPA-free. To prevent spillage into the bag, bottle holders are included with the bag.
Apart from an AC adapter, operation is also possible with the convenient battery pack, so you can pump anywhere, anytime.
The pump remains inside the bag during use so there’s no complicated setup. Attaching the shield is also easy. On purchase, you receive standard-sized shields, but if they don’t fit properly, there are other sizes available.
The let-down button is a big plus on this pump. With some pumps, you may be waiting quite some time before your milk comes in, but with the In Style, the let-down is quick and the suction strong. As a result, you can fill bottles much quicker to maintain a good milk supply.
Though this is not a closed system, cleaning is easy and it involves simply rinsing the tubes. Most moms end up pumping away from home at some point, which is where the battery pack comes in. All in all, this pump performs well.
Ease of Use
This pump is easy to set up and use, no fumbling with tubes or wires. Some breast pumps can cause quite a bit of discomfort; however, this one is not just efficient but also comfortable. After the first few uses, you will learn to relax, safe in the knowledge that your milk will freely and quickly come in and fill the bottles for your baby.
What’s more, you are free to use your hands for other little tasks, like holding a book, while pumping. The flanges stay in place, and because of the bag, you can discretely use this pump while out and about. Some moms did find it a bit noisy though.
While most moms are more than satisfied with the performance of this pump, some struggled and even experienced reduced milk supply. Perhaps this is because the pumping action of the In Style didn’t suit them. However, most moms were thrilled to discover how quick and efficient the pumping process is with this. Within 10 minutes, most women could empty both breasts and stock up, which, to my mind, is incredible.
The Tote Bag
The tote bag is so stylish that one wouldn’t ever think it contained a breast pump. If you are at work and want to express during your lunch hour, you can conveniently store the milk in the cooler bag inside the carry bag. All of the accessories fit nicely.
The Accessories and Replaceable Items
Included with this pump are the motor, tote bag, cooler bag, ice pack, 5-ounce bottles, tubing, AC adaptor, battery pack, valves, and PersonalFit connectors as well as an instruction manual.
Different sizes of shields are available for purchase separately. Extra or replacement tubing and valves are also available if needed.
The Philips AVENT Double Pump comes at a lower price, but doesn’t have all the same features. To begin with, you need to connect it to a power source, so it’s not possible to use it on the go.
Nonetheless, it performs quite well, and the soft cushion encourages let-down. It’s easy to set up and use, much like the Medela, and again, there’s no discomfort during pumping. There are three settings to choose from for optimum ease-of-use.
With your purchase you get the pump, a bag, two extra-soft newborn-flow nipples, tubing, cushions, 4-ounce bottles, two breast pad sample packs, and two sealing discs.
If you are not bothered by the lack of portability, the lower cost of this pump might appeal to you.
However, if portability is your main concern, the MADENAL Travel Set might just be your best option. This is another double electric breast pump with good performance and plenty of conveniences attached.
This is the lowest-priced of the three pumps, but it still comes with everything you’ll need. Setup is quick and easy, and when you turn it on, it gently stimulates to encourage let-down. After that, you can choose between three suction powers.
This is a small pump with a battery pack for portability. It comes with a cooler bag and ice pack, as well as tubes, shields, and bottles.
Should You Buy the Medela Pump In Style?
Having reviewed this pump, I feel the awards are well-deserved because this is truly a great breast pump. It’s efficient, perfect for on-the-go expression, and most importantly, it’s comfortable to use. The accessories and the stylish tote bag are welcome extras, but undoubtedly, this pump delivers.
The only drawback is the price, especially if you compare it to the MADENAL, which is less expensive and still offers a lot of features.
Ultimately, the Medela Pump in Style is for moms who need to pump several times a day, both at home and on the go. If that’s your level of use, I would highly recommend the Pump in Style. But if portability is the top and only concern, the Philips AVENT might suit you better. The MADENAL is perfect for women who want a portable pump for less frequent use.
If it’s both efficiency and portability that you require, the Medala meets all your needs and is well worth buying.
